Archery
Archery is one of the oldest sports in the world, having been practiced for thousands of years. It was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and has been part of the Summer Olympics ever since. Archery is traditionally seen as a very masculine sport, but in recent years it has become increasingly popular with women as well.
Archery is a relatively simple sport to understand and follow. The objective is to shoot arrows at a target, with the goal of hitting the target as close to the center as possible. The competition is held over a set distance, with athletes shooting at targets from a set distance away. The archer with the highest score at the end of the competition is declared the winner.
There are two main types of archery competitions within the Olympic Games – individual and team. In individual competition, each archer competes alone, with their score being based on their performance alone. In team competitions, archers compete in teams of three, with each team’s score being based on the combined performance of all three archers.
Badminton
Badminton was first played as a competitive sport in British India, and it was brought back to England by soldiers returning from the subcontinent. The game quickly became popular among the upper class, and it was soon being played at country parties and other social gatherings. In 1876, badminton was formally recognized as a sport by the All England Croquet Club. The club set up the first set of official rules, which were based on those used in the game of POONA.
The sport began to grow in popularity throughout Europe and Asia in the late 19th century, and it was included as a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900. It wasn’t until 1992 that badminton became an official Olympic sport, and it has been part of every Summer Olympics since then.
Badminton is typically played outdoors on a rectangular court that is 44 feet long and 17 feet wide for singles matches, or 20 feet wide for doubles matches. The court is divided in half by a net that is 3 feet 6 inches high at the posts and 5 feet high in the middle.
Players score points by hitting the shuttlecock (also called a “bird” or “buzz”) over the net with their racquets so that it lands inside their opponents’ half of the court. A point is also awarded if an opponent hits the shuttlecock out of bounds, hits it into the net, or fails to return it over the net within their allotted time (which is two seconds for singles matches and one second for doubles matches). The first player or team to reach 21 points wins the match.
Baseball
Baseball was one of the original sports in the Summer Olympics, debuting in the 1904 games. It was dropped from the program after the 2008 Olympics but was reinstated for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Baseball is a popular sport in Japan and should help increase interest and viewership for the 2020 Games.
Basketball
Basketball was first included in the Summer Olympics in 1936. The sport has been contested at every Summer Olympics since then, with the exception of the 1940 and 1944 Games, which were canceled due to World War II.
In the 2020 Summer Olympics, basketball will again be contested as a men’s and women’s sport. A total of 12 teams will compete in each tournament, with each team comprised of 12 players. The format for the tournament will be a single-elimination bracket, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the medal round.
Boxing
Boxing was one of the original sports in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. It was also part of the program at the 1904 and 1908 Games. The sport was dropped from the 1912 Olympics, but reinstated for the 1920 games. It has been included in every Summer Olympics program since then.
Canoeing
Canoeing was first included in the Summer Olympics in 1936, and has been a part of the games ever since. There are two types of canoeing that are contested in the Olympics – sprint and slalom. Canoe sprint events are held over a straight course of 200, 500 or 1000 meters, while canoe slalom events take place on a whitewater course with gates that competitors must pass through. In the 2020 Summer Olympics, there will be 12 medal events in canoeing – six for men and six for women.
Cycling
Cycling is one of the sports that will be featured in the Summer Olympics 2020. There are multiple cycling events that will take place, including road races and track races. Some of the top cyclists in the world are expected to compete, so it should be an exciting competition to watch.
Diving
Diving has been included in every edition of the Summer Olympics since 1904, except for 1912 in Stockholm because the organizers considered it to be too dangerous. It is one of four sports that has never been absent from the Olympic program.
There are two types of diving included in the Summer Olympics: springboard and platform. In both events, divers perform a set number of compulsory dives before performing a set number of voluntary dives, with each dive graded by a panel of seven judges. The diver with the highest total score after all dives has been completed is declared the winner.
Equestrian
Although not as well-known as some of the other sports in the Summer Olympics, equestrian events are sure to be exciting to watch. Equestrian sports involve horse riding and can be divided into three main disciplines: dressage, eventing, and jumping.
Dressage is often considered the most elegant of the three disciplines, and involves riders performing a set of predetermined movements. Eventing is a more challenging sport that tests a horse and rider’s endurance, as well as their ability to complete a variety of tasks. Jumping is perhaps the most theatrical of the disciplines, and features riders navigated their horses over a series of obstacles.
Whether you’re a fan of horseback riding or not, the equestrian events at the 2020 Summer Olympics are sure to be exciting to watch!
